IMG_7329What is a digital world?

A digital world can be describe as all technology that we are surrounded with and it is using trough whole wide world. This technology is developing and changing every day. Nowadays technology plays a very important role in our lives. we are using the technology from early morning when we get up till late night when we go to sleep. We are accessing the whole world through the internet, simply by using our smart phones. I can check my email, Facebook, tweeter and many other social networks. Moreover our children are growing up in this digital world as well. They are using new technology at home and at school. At home they are  using I pad, laptop, TV and etc….. and at school they are using computers projectors and many other technologies as shown in video below.

So it is important for teachers to update themselves with the new technology, games, videos, even I (myself) am studying my bachelor degree online.

“The current student population, from early years through to secondary school, have been born into a digital world. This generation is highly connected, as many of this generation have had life-long use of communications and media technologies such as the world wide web, instant messaging, text messaging, MP3 players, mobile phones and You tube, earning them the nickname ‘digital natives’.” Howell 2012

By increasing the number of students who are digitally learning in community and society, the concept of digital citizenship is getting more important.

A digital citizen refers to a person utilizing information technology (IT) in order to engage in society, politics, and government participation. K. Mossberger, et al.

The video bellow talks more about digital citizenship.

Digital Fluency

Miller and Bartlett, 2012 defined the digital fluency as students’ capability in using digital technologies to achieve desired learning outcomes. A digitally fluent person can decide when to use specific digital technologies to achieve their desired outcome. They can articulate why the tools they are using will provide their desired outcome

A digitally fluent student:
•   knows where and how to find and access information quickly and accurately
•   can critique the relevance and accuracy of information being accessed
•   is an adept producer of digital content
•   can recognise and use the most effective methods of reaching their intended audience
•   understands and demonstrates how use digital technologies responsibly including – digital security (self-protection), copyright

Cris Turple & Caitlin Langford etc state that “Many students arrive at schools as digital natives, already having developed the ability to use a wide variety of technology. In fact, many educators find they can look to their students to problem solve when facing technological difficulties. What this means is that while students are generally adept at using technology, teachers need to shift their focus to guiding their students across the spectrum from technologically literate towards technologically fluency.”

So digital fluency is like language fluency which is being fluent in the new technology. Nowadays, all the students are fluent with the new technology. They were born in a digital world; they are familiar with the new technology since the first day of their lives by hearing the sounds of digital mobile phones, digital cameras and etc.…and  when they grow up they play digital games with digital I pad and there are many educational web site that they are providing educational games. So before starting the school they have lots of knowledge about the new technology.

Digital identities and digital security

Techopedia state about the digital identities that “a digital identity is an online or networked identity adopted or claimed in cyberspace by an individual, organization or electronic device. These users may also project more than one digital identity through multiple communities. In terms of digital identity management, key areas of concern are security and privacy.”

On the other hand Gemalto defined the digital identity and digital security as Digital identity is the network or Internet equivalent to the real identity of a person or entity (like a business or government agency) when used for identification in connections or transactions from PCs, cell phones or other personal devices.

Digital security is the protection of your digital identity – the network or Internet equivalent of your physical identity. Digital security includes the tools you use to secure your identity, assets and technology in the online and mobile world.”

Identity Theft and Password Security OnlineMBA. Are your passwords secure? #IdentityTheft:

So it is important to understand what is a digital identity? and what is a digital security? because we are using our identity and uploading our pictures when we go to some social networks like Facebook, twitter, Instagram and many other social website as well as we are buying lots of things online by using our credit card so it is important to know where should or should not trust the websites and we have to secure our identity by creating user name and password or pin numbers and also we have to protect our computers from hackers by installing protector software and anti-virus software.

At the end we can say that putting our ID or credit cards numbers online has lots of risks but sometimes we are accepting these risks because it makes our lives easy

Final reflection;

It is true that the technology is changing every day and it is very important for all educators to be up to date with the new Technology because most of the students are updated with the new technology. However, by creating my blog using WordPress I experienced variety of new technologies like blog pikatochart, Pinterest and many more, and as an educator I tried to be creative on creating my blog to attract my student attention. Moreover, by using new technology and being aware of the new technology, we pass the knowledge to new generation faster and quicker and teach them how to use the new technology. As the technology is in progress and every day a new and more sophisticated one comes or develops in the world, people particularly the educators should update their knowledge as the primary source of knowledge. On the other hand creating this blog made me aware of teaching my student the correct and safe usage of the new technology for example digital identity and digital security. Digital identity is the network or Internet equivalent to the real identity of a person or entity and “Digital security is the protection of your digital identity – the network or Internet equivalent of your physical identity” (Gemalto n.d.).

However by informing my students digital identities and digital securities, they learn the safe way of using the new technology and also they can pass this to their families and to the next generations.

In conclusion I can say that creating this blog as a future educator, we come to the context of digital pedagogy. Digital pedagogy is the study of how to teach using digital technology. (Howell 2012)
